5 mistakes we make with colour
Understanding colour theory and knowing your BEST colours is one of the most empowering ways to not only feel more confident, but to have an intentional and cohesive wardrobe that SAVES you money. Sounds too good to be true? Trust me, it’s not.
More often than not, where I see most of my clients confused or cluttered is around the area of colour – either not feeling confident to branch out of the same old (see my How To Introduce Colour to Your Wardrobe Blog) or simply having no clue what suits them with these being the 5 key wardrobe mistakes I am seeing repeated….
Mistake 1: Following what’s ‘trending’
While trends can be fun and certainly a great way to experiment, shopping purely off what’s trending makes 2 crucial mistakes. What’s trending may not compliment your skin tone and will make you feel ‘off’, you take it off and it sits in your wardrobe. Secondly, buying with trends as your motivation and not with ‘bigger picture’ intention just adds clutter to your closet rather than a wardrobe workhorse.
Mistake 2: Limiting to black.
Now before you think I’m getting on the anti wearing black soapbox, the reality is, universally, black as a neutral is best on 1 of the 4 traditional ‘seasons’ and doesn’t compliment most colours despite us being told that ‘black goes with everything’ and ‘black being slimming (that’s ANOTHER blog!)
Mistake 3: Creating wardrobe chaos.
More is not more and where many go wrong is during the experimental stage (see mistake 1) adding what I call wardrobe orphans and once offs for ‘interest’ but it just adds more confusion, not cohesion. This is why a 1-on-1 colour analysis is so beneficial to help you create a colour story and to mix and match with confidence, building a wardrobe with less pieces but more combinations.
Mistake 4: Ignoring the power behind colour.
Have you heard about dopamine dressing? This is wearing a colour that makes us feel good and boosts our confidence (and sells!) Different colours evoke different emotions and having a better understanding of colour psychology helps you to dress for the energy you want to project.
Tip: Wear your best stand out colour when you want to sell an idea or yourself in an interview. It’s all about being memorable!
Mistake 5: Forgetting the 80/20 rule of thumb.
Yes, knowing your best colours absolutely helps you build a more aesthetic mix and match wardrobe but we have to have a little wriggle room right? When it comes to pattern/ print/ multiple colours, don’t get too hung up on every colour having to be perfect. Ideally 80% will be fabulous with 20% grace – this is a great ratio to remember when experimenting with trends or loving a colour that doesn’t love us back.
If you want to take the confusion out of getting dressed, get a more cohesive and workable wardrobe, shop with clarity and intention, FEEL amazing in power colours, stand out in an interview and be memorable for the right reasons, The Colour Consult is for you.
