Winter Woolies Care Guide

I’m not going to lie. It’s secretly my favourite ‘time of wardrobe’ – boots, layering and cosy knits are where I feel my happiest (equally as happy in my PJS and bedsocks in front of the fire) but like linen in the summer, I know many of you are nervy around the care of your knits which is why I have 5 simple guidelines to get more wear from your woolies.

1. Quality counts: Look for the highest quality you can afford when it comes to knitties. I love a blend of wool, mohair or alpaca with synthetic fabrics. This ensures a better and longer lasting wear = more wardrobe mileage & less waste!

2. Handle with Care: Get more mileage from your knitwear by taking care when washing it. Wash in cool water with a gentle wool detergent. Avoid harsh chemicals or vigorous rubbing, as this can damage delicate fibres. Be sure to gently squeeze out excess water and lay the garment flat to dry to maintain its shape.

3. Careful storage. Knitwear should never be hung as it can stretch out of shape. Instead, fold the garment neatly and store it in a drawer to stacked on a shelf. If you need to hang it, see my hanging knit wear hack over on the gram.

4. Beware of Moths: Winter woolies are a favorite snack for moths! Store your knitwear in airtight containers or garment bags when not in use and add cedar balls or lavender sachets to your wardrobe to detract them.

5. Pilling Prevention: Those annoying little balls of fuzz can occur on knitwear due to friction. Add a fabric shaver or sweater comb to your care kit to gently remove pills.
