Reasons why your wardrobe isn’t working for you
Winter wardrobe blues hitting hard already before the seasons even started? Let’s have a chat about why your wardrobe just isn’t cutting it anymore.
As a personal stylist working with women from all walks of life (and I’ve been in my fair share of wardrobes!) I’ve identified 5 reasons why wardrobes just aren’t working like they should (and a couple of these points might surprise you!)
Forget about trends
Confession time. This industry sometimes gives me the ick. Here me out. I love working with everyday woman and helping them find their own unique style, but the fast fashion, the stores bulging with stock, pushy sales people and the ‘next hot thing’ take away truly owning your own sense of style. It’s easy to get caught up in the whirlwind of fashion fads, but if you’re not careful, you might lose sight of your own unique style in the process. Remember, fashion can be fun, but it should also reflect who you are. Trends are fun to experiment with but don’t spend big dollars on seasonal fads that don’t reflect the true you.
‘Spending’ time
Which brings me to my next point – let’s talk about where your money is going. Spend your money where you spend your time. Think of your week to week lifestyle as a pie – the biggest chunk of pie is where you should allocate your fashion budget. It astounds me how many of you have drawers packed with active wear for a gym you visit once a week (hey no judgement here! I spell gym with and ’n’ and add cheese and crackers to it)
Embrace change
Don’t you just love being a woman and all the changes it brings….(inserts spinning eye emoji here) We are changing girls and our wardrobes need to move with the times. Stop holding onto the ‘one day whens’, the ‘I used tos’ and the ‘if onlys’ – your wardrobe should be a collection of clothing that serves. Maybe you’ve transitioned to a different job, become a Mama, or simply evolved as a person. Whatever the reason, if your lifestyle has shifted, it’s time for your closet to follow suit. Don’t hold onto pieces that serve a past version of yourself.
Back to basics
I get it. We like to add a little wow to the wardrobe but think of your wardrobe as a pantry. You can keep adding sprinkles, but without flour, butter, sugar and eggs, you don’t get a cake. Same with your wardrobe basics. If you don’t have workhorse staples, you don’t get a complete outfit (or outfit options!) Ah, the capsule wardrobe basics – the unsung heroes of any closet. If you’re missing these key pieces, you will risk being stuck with clothes but no ‘outfits’.
Get organised
’I forgot I had those!’I can’t tell you the amount of times I hear this as I am rummaging through a cluttered closet. Sometimes storage solutions are the issue. I can’t stress enough how uniformed hangers and a selection of storage boxes and the like refresh your wardrobe and help you get dressed each day.
